6 Top Qualities A Business Coach Needs

Helping Managers Succeed
Qualities A Business Coach Needs

Before you hire a business coach, you will want to know what qualities they have and how they present themselves. There are some qualities a business coach needs to succeed and make businesses successful. Bringing businesses to a new level is hard work and a true business coach will not back down from a challenge. Friendly and competent business coaches will elevate all areas of your business.

Our coaches at Wasatch ActionCOACH have a variety of skills that will help business owners of all personality types. With years of experience in the business industry and a true passion for helping others, we are the right business coach for the job.

1- Positivity

When it comes to your business, you want to work with people who believe in you and your business values. Having a positive attitude about where your business can go and what skills you already have are qualities that a business coach needs. Positivity can look like being able to adapt and tackle problems, being happy to work with you and your employees, and bringing a smile to each meeting.

2- Flexibility

Being flexible is essential in business because lots of things can change and adjust as you grow. Being able to adapt and change to what a client wants or what they can afford is a sign of a great business coach. Flexibility is one of the main qualities a business coach needs because change is the only thing that is consistent. Small businesses or even large corporations need to create new products and strategies in order to stay relevant.

3- Holding You Accountable

The goal of hiring a business coach is to push you toward your goals and hold you accountable for the steps you need to get there. If a business coach doesn’t hold you accountable, you may find yourself falling short. Someone to hold you accountable also means you have someone to support you while you make changes.

6 Top Qualities A Business Coach Needs

Accountability is big for those in leadership roles, owners, and managers. Our business coaches have these qualities a business coach needs because we realize how important smart goals are for elevating your sales, communication, and more. Setting goals is only the first step, accomplishing them is another story but the only thing that will move you up the ladder.

4- Confidence

Showing your new client that you know what you are doing will help them trust your services. Confidence is one of the best qualities a business coach needs because clients won’t want to work with you if you are unsure about every decision you make.

Confidence also comes from a great track record of success with others. Having confidence in yourself, your speaking skills, your business strategies, and the company you work for is essential.

5- Quality Experience

Many business coaches will have owned a business or worked in a major company previously. This experience is really the only qualifier for them to be able to mentor you about your business strategies.

Experience working in large companies or managing one will give business coaches an idea of the problems you could be experiencing. When looking for qualities a business coach needs, don’t forget to look at their resume and list of experiences.

6- Strong Communication

Communicating your ideas clearly and telling business owners what they need to do is one of the qualities a business coach needs. Communication is the only way that anything will get done in a business because employees will need to work together to complete projects. A business coach should be able to recap your session and outline clear action steps for you to follow.

Communication refers to more than just talking though. In fact, good communicators should be able to listen and adapt as their client explains their needs actively. Clear communication also means a business coach should ask questions and ask for feedback as they work with you.

Mark Lambert: Well, you know, our experience with Wasatch ActionCOACH has been really fantastic. We’ve had business coaching in the past, so we knew what it was.  But I didn’t have a really good connection with the guy that was coaching us at the first go around. So, I wasn’t very receptive to coaching. My son, however, ran with it and took a company that I sold him from doing okay to doing awesome.

We went to a one-hour seminar. Sterling was there and everything he said just made sense. And then my son reminded me that in 2014 I took a failing company and turned it into a company I no longer needed to be working in. And I’m thinking, man, I sold him that company and now I’ve got a new company I’ve started and I’m in that same position as before. The light came on.

I made an instant connection with Sterling and Frank because I felt comfortable with them. They were telling me stuff I already knew but had forgotten or just out of stubbornness didn’t want to do. We signed up for the Wasatch ActionCOACH program.

By about the seventh week, we increased our business in one area 60%. I mean, it was a noticeable boom one week, 60%. Other side of our shop, it was a 37% the first week. And that was by simply somebody that wasn’t me coming in and asking, what what’s causing your issues? Well, our issue was that my guys were pushing cars around all the time. So, it was something as simple as getting rid of the chaos, decluttering the shop and putting a wall in between.

And again, 60% increase on the side I put the wall in because they were no longer moving cars all day long in and out of their way and they could actually do their job. We started tracking and we were spending $12,780 every month, lost production hours, moving cars. Put a wall up, move four hoists on an angle, we gained 37% on one side, 60% on the other. And every week, it just gets better and better.

I mean, you just can’t imagine the relief, you know. The biggest thing I’ve taken out of it is that I was working in the shop a lot.  I didn’t want to work weekends, but I worked weekends. I’d work from 6:00am until 7 or 8:00pm at night, seven days a week, and was just spinning my wheels. I was tired, grumpy, ornery.

Four weeks into the program, I left for a weekend, didn’t even think about the job. Fifth week into the program, we took a vacation. I left my phone on the counter on silent because I didn’t have to worry about the shop. And I made all simple, easy adjustments. It wasn’t anything major.  It was just simple things that we had pointed out to us.

And in having two coaches that totally understand us and can give us two different perspectives, it’s just become easy. I mean, our lives are easy. We don’t fight anymore. We didn’t fight a lot. But, you know, we understand each other now. We’re on the same page instead of butting heads all the time. And honestly, the financial part is coming in and we haven’t even worked on financials yet. It’s something as simple as staying in our own lanes, doing our own jobs and communicating better.

Jackie Lambert: It’s been a blessing to be able to have them as our coaches. I mean, it’s made a big difference in our lives. Just being able to meet once a week and talk.  We’re very honest about what’s going on and all the feedback that we get from the coaches has been amazing. Like I said, it has changed us. Being married for 45 years, you know, it’s really changed how we work together in our business. We’re working towards our goals together.

Coaching

Blog by Jennifer Witnauer, Wasatch ActionCOACH Marketing Specialist

I have goals and dreams.  Lots of them!  Some of them I’ve had for years (like a decade).  I have at times pursued them, strategized how to achieve them, started working towards them… and got sidetracked and stopped.  In DISC profiles I am an ‘I-S’, high ‘I’, which means I am all people oriented and very little task oriented.  (Yep, that tracks!)  So, I have lots of great ideas and plans but I’m not always the best at following through with them. Which is why I have recently invested in a Coaching Program.

Why I'm Investing in Coaching for a Great Future

I’m part of Jack Canfield’s Game Changer 6-month coaching program with Jack Canfield and Patty Aubery.  I have owned Jack’s book, ‘The Success Principles’ for maybe 12 years.  In fact, there are 3 copies of it in my house.  So, I know all the things I need to do to achieve my goals.  It’s all there in black and white, laid out step by step!  However, I am the type of person who needs accountability.  And that makes a coaching program right for me.  It’s designed to accelerate reaching my goals.  It provides the accountability I need and the motivation to keep me going.

An additional benefit of joining this coaching program is that I am surrounded by successful, smart, kind, and ambitious people.  I can learn from them – from experiences they share, advice they provide, and resources they recommend.  They are a supportive group of goal-oriented, success-focused, and positive-minded people.  This is also what I’ve found in the ActionCOACH community and part of the reason I love working for Wasatch ActionCOACH.

At Wasatch ActionCOACH our certified business coaches are helping clients reach their goals and realize their dreams.  They provide a framework for success and accountability to help them achieve their objectives.  I’ve seen it happen.  Coaching also provides the opportunity to be surrounded by other smart, supportive, success-minded, ambitious owners and entrepreneurs.

Jim Rohn said that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.  Do the people around you align with what you want out of your future?  I know where I want to go and what I want to achieve.  And I’m happy to have made an investment in my future to help make that happen.

Why I'm Investing in Coaching for a Great Future

Where do you want to be this time next year?  If you are like me and have big goals, if you are tired of spinning your wheels, if you want more out of your business and life… Then consider doing something different this year! Consider what will help you stay on track and commit to making the progress you desire.

It’s wonderful to have dreams and goals! It’s even more wonderful to figure out what will help you TAKE ACTION. We don’t need to try to do everything on our own. Find the support and accountability you need.

I’ve learned that it’s also important to share our goals with other supportive, success-minded people. Because you never know who or what another knows that can help you take the next step!

So, what goals and dreams do you have? Be bold. Share one in the comments.  Maybe you will inspire others to make 2023 a Game Changing year!
